Tam Cowan: Top Marks for Old Loans Inn

What a way to end 2011! The Daily Record's award-winning 'Restaurant critic of the year' gave the Old Loans Inn “an unbeatable 25/25” after his visit to the Ayrshire venue.

Tam was blown away by the quality of food, service and general all-round welcome he and his guests received at the Old Loans Inn.

“With an unbelievable 25/25, I can promise you it ticked all the boxes...The food (comfort food at it’s very best) was sensational,” were just some of the glowing references from the review (Daily Record, Saturday, December 31).

As the last review of 2011 the SimpsInns venue, on the outskirts of Troon in the village of Loans, is in the hunt for the prestigious “Hot Plate Award”.

In fact in Tam’s words: “Gold, frankincense and myrrh? Listen, at the risk of upsetting the Three Wise Men, the only gift I’ll be carrying the next time I visit the Old Loans Inn will be a big shiny Hot Plate Award.”

Malcolm Simpson, owner of the Old Loans Inn, was delighted with the news: “The Old Loans Inn has long held the reputation as one of the best eating houses around, but to have such an endorsement from the country’s top restaurant critic is fantastic news.”

All told it has been quite a year for the Old Loans Inn as it was named 2011 Small Hotel of the Year at the Golf Tourism Scotland awards held in St Andrews in November.

Malcolm and Karen Simpson have always maintained a strong work ethic and all their efforts paid off when SimpsInns picked up the ‘Ayrshire Family Business of the Year’ title at the prestigious Ayrshire Business Awards.

Malcolm and Karen play a very hand-on role in the day-to-day running of their business and as their strapline states, SimpsInns is “Privately Owned, Proudly Independent”. It is their attention to detail and emphasis on quality of service and product, which has allowed their business to evolve despite these straitened times.

“To have won this prestigious award is a great honour, not only for Karen and I and our two boys, Lee and Jack, but recognition for our entire team,” said a delighted Malcolm Simpson after receiving the family business award from TV presenter Kaye Adams.

“Our dedicated staff work tirelessly to ensure we provide an excellent service every time guests visit or stay at one of our SimpsInns venues. This award makes us very proud as a family but it’s very much for the staff too.”

It has been a roller-coaster ride of late as SimpsInns will officially open their brand new Waterside Bar and Restaurant at Seamill, West Kilbride on Thursday (October 20th). As Ayrshire “must visit” venue, the Waterside will sit alongside the established Old Loans Inn, Troon and award winning Gailes Hotel, Irvine where last night’s Ayrshire Business Awards were held in a packed Lagavulin Suite.

In 12 short years the husband and wife team has built-up a thriving business and are one of the key players within the Ayrshire hospitality industry. It all began after they bought the Old Loans Inn. Two years ago Malcolm and Karen invested £2million in a redevelopment programme and transformed the once country pub into a 20-bedroom boutique hotel.

The Gailes, a former VOWS Wedding Venue of the Year, has been shortlisted for the same award this year. The four-star hotel, complete with luxury penthouse, whirlpool bath and spa, hosts over 100 weddings per year and remains one of the most popular venues in the country.

Si! Café, Bar and Restaurant is due to open in 2012 at the site of the former Golf Hotel in Irvine before phase two at the Waterside gets under way to include conference and banqueting facilities and bespoke bedrooms.

We’re not ones to blow our own trumpet but sometimes needs must and all that! The award-winning Gailes Hotel has just been shortlisted once more for the Vows Awards Wedding Venue of the Year 2011.

The news marks an unprecedented run of five consecutive years that the SimpsInns venue has been shortlisted for the awards, the first time by any Ayrshire business.

Put another way, The Gailes Hotel won the Vows Wedding Venue of the Year in 2007 and has been shortlisted ever since.

It’s a remarkable feat and one that makes us all proud here at SimpsInns for we know this award is voted for by the bride and grooms.

The winners will be announced at the Gala and Dinner Dance at the Hilton Hotel, Glasgow on Monday, November 7^th, 2011.

Another year, another autumn approaches; it must mean awards season. It also means another year when SimpsInns has been shortlisted for not one but two prestigious Ayrshire Business Awards 2011.

The Gailes Hotel, Irvine has been shortlisted in the category of “Outstanding Performing Business with over 25 Employees”, while SimpsInns was shortlisted for this year’s “Ayrshire Family Business of the Year”.

The awards ceremony takes place on Thursday, October 13^th at the Gailes Hotel where TV presenter Kaye Adams will be on hand as MC.

It’s been an extremely busy period for the family-run SimpsInns group with the new Waterside Restaurant and Bar due to open next month at Seamill, West Kilbride. Upon completion, attentions will then turn to the new Si! Bar and Restaurant at the site of the former Golf Hotel in Irvine.

SimpsInns expands in Ayrshire with new Waterside

The Waterside will be the standout, “must visit” destination along the north Ayrshire coastline and will become a key source of employment to the area despite these economically straitened times.

The Waterside at Seamill, West Kilbride is the latest development in the growing SimpsInns portfolio, which already includes the established Gailes Restaurant and Hotel in Irvine and the renowned Old Loans Inn, Troon among other on-going projects in Ayrshire.

Malcolm and Karen Simpson, owners of the family-run SimpsInns Ltd, acquired the site for their latest venture in February 2009. For years the existing building and surrounding area lay derelict before the Simpsons secured planning and decided to bring their vision to fruition.

After an initial £1.5million first phase investment the finishing line is now in sight with the New England (Cape Cod) design theme coming into focus. The Waterside will open its doors to the general public from the beginning of October 2011.

High quality, imaginative cuisine and fantastic service has always been a standard at SimpsInns; those traits and more will carry through to The Waterside where unspoilt, panoramic views out to the Isle of Arran are also on show.

“We are very excited at the prospect of The Waterside opening in the coming weeks,” explained owner Malcolm Simpson, a key player in the Ayrshire hospitality industry since the mid 1990s. “After months of planning, all the hard work behind the scenes is coming together in what promises to be a unique bar and dining experience on the north Ayrshire landscape.”

On arrival at The Waterside, guests will immediately be struck by the New England design of the building, which utilises its location adjacent to the beach to offer front row viewing across the bay - scenery you will never tire of.

SimpsInns engaged local company RDK Construction to carry out the work after they were also contracted for the £2million redevelopment programme of the Old Loans Inn, completed ahead of the 2009 Open Golf Championship at Turnberry.

An innovative, nautical design theme carries into the open plan interior where the main bar and kitchen serving pass will become focal points. An upstairs mezzanine area will provide another sought-after retreat, ideal for private functions or space to simply while away the afternoon with stunning, uninterrupted views to Arran serving as the idyllic backdrop.

Management and the head chef are already busy preparing the new menus. The fresh fish ice display, Robata barbeque grill, rotisserie chicken facility and further local produce will be on display at the kitchen’s open pass where those dining will see the team of chefs at work and their meals come together before their very eyes.

As part of the building’s unique design, expansive sliding doors open out onto the wrap around covered verandah, which in turn feeds into the private garden. Just a matter of steps away and beyond the boundary wall is the unspoilt beach, ideal for a leisurely stroll before working up an appetite. The Waterside will cater for up to 400 covers between the interior and exterior dining areas.

With such a considerable investment, SimpsInns envisage the need to employ in the region of 60 new staff and are actively seeking applications ahead of October’s opening. With a strong emphasis placed on fresh produce, management are especially keen to engage a large team of experienced chefs from executive to trainee level.

Kilmaurs Thistle Boys Football Club are celebrating a new set of strips for their under 12 team.
Ahead of their recent trip to The Netherlands for a football tournament the football club ran a hidden team for Ayrshire businesses to raise funds for the trip. The idea was that the winning business would get their names on the new shirts for the trip and remainder of the season and The Old Loans Inn won!

Some of the boys are seen with the new strips at a recent match in Kilmarnock. Malcolm Simpson thought it was a great idea, "The Hidden Team cost us £20 which was a donation for a good cause and we ended up with a sponsorhip deal! We wish them well with their future."

Simpsinns and Dundonald Links host Golf Tour Operators

SimpsInns privately-owned hotel group, in conjunction with Dundonald Links, are hosting the inaugural “Gailes Open Golf Day” where tour operators will have the chance to experience championship links golf and renowned Scottish hospitality at its best.

Ayrshire is renowned the world over for its championship golf courses and we at Simpsinns - with Old Loans Inn and Gailes Hotel - are fortunate to be situated at the very heart of the hallowed golfing terrain.

Proceedings will get underway from 7pm on Monday, March 29th where the tour operators will be greeted at the Gailes Hotel. After checking-in at either the Gailes Hotel or our sister property, the newly redeveloped Old Loans Inn, they will enjoy an informal drinks reception followed by an informal dinner in the Zest Restaurant.

The following morning breakfast will be served before the operators take to the course at neighbouring Dundonald Links from 9am onwards for the day’s singles stableford competition, after which a brief presentation of prizes will conclude events.

British Boys Amateur Championship in Ayrshire 2010

The British Boys Championship will be returning to Ayrshire in the summer of 2010 and will be played over the Barassie Links course at Kilmarnock Barassie Golf Club from Tuesday 10th August 2010 to Sunday 15th August 2010. The competition has been played at Barassie before and prestigious winners include Ronan Rafferty.

The first stage of the Championship involves 252 players each of whom plays two rounds of 18 holes, one to be played on each of the two courses. The 64 lowest scores over the 36 holes and ties for 64th place will compete in the match play stage of the Championship, which will commence on Thursday 12 August over Kilmarnock (Barassie). Each match will consist of one round of 18 holes except the Final which will be over 36 holes.

There was great excitement this week at the Gailes Hotel when the nominations for the prestigious Vows Awards were announced for Best Scottish Wedding Venue.

Being the only Ayrshire wedding venue to have won the award, we are delighted that we have been short listed for the third consecutive year. Newlyweds from all over the country vote for their favourite wedding suppliers across 20 categories.

Companies nominated are recognised for offering consistent excellent service, quality and reliability, before during and after the wedding.

The highly sought after title is fiercely contested with the Wedding Venue title receiving thousand of entries.

Duke of York hosts Official Tournament Dinner at Gailes Hotel

The Duke of York Young Champions Golf Trophy is once again being hosted at the highly acclaimed Dundonald Links (8-10th September). The International competition is an unique opportunity for under 18 boys and girls to compete for the same trophy whilst experiencing the true challenge of links golf in Ayrshire at the Challenging Dundonald Links.

For the third year running HRH The Duke of York has hosted the Official Tournament Gala dinner at the Gailes Hotel, after enjoying a drinks reception on the rooftop and official photographs a delicious meal was enjoyed.

HRH then addresses the 57 competitors from 34 countries expressing his delight at how successful the tournament had become.

Due to adverse weather on Tuesday the competitors will undertake 36 holes at Dundonald Links today in the Ayrshire sunshine.

Womans Home International Golf

The Gailes Hotel is delighted to be hosting officials of the Ladies Golfing Union and members of the home Scotland team for the Woman's Home International that gets under way at Irvine (Bogside) Golf Club this week (September 9th-11th), where the home nations will battle it out for honours.

Teams of eight players from Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales will battle it out. Play commences each morning at 8.30am with foursome matches and singles commence at 1.00pm.

Wales are the defending champions after narrowly edging out England at Wrexham Golf Club last year.

Old Loans Tees off

The Old Loans Inn has now been up and running for a couple of weeks and getting rave reviews. With The Open Championship at nearby Turnberry over the past week the hotel, restaurant and bar has been running pretty much at capacity providing a great test for the management and new team.
Proprietor Malcolm Simpson was delighted with the opening period, "We've got a really good team in place now and combined with the superb work undertaken by the architects, design team and builders we have a product that we think Ayrshire can be proud of. The response from visitors to The Open last week were really encouraging and with the golf theme running through the whole building we are confident that the market will value our product.
We also had a number of drop in visits from journalists and travel trade who had heard about the place and have already signed some good contracts with tour operators for 2010."
The new website is currently in development and will be launched with on line bookings before the end of July.

Our Old Loans Inn, situated in the village of Loans, is now under re-development and fast becoming our very own Scottish Coaching Inn.

Located in the outskirts of Troon in the village of Loans, the 18th century Old Loans Inn will retain some of its original stone walls, roaring fires and old Scottish Charm.

The new Old Loans Inn will additionally boast 20 spacious individually designed bedrooms with all the mod-cons for the 21st century with an equally spacious restaurant and bar. Old Loans was always well regarded for great food and warm and friendly service and for sure that's one thing that won't have changed.
